Why remove a white background?

Because it is the most common background there is: product photos on a white sweep, logos exported on white, scanned documents, screenshots. A white background removed cleanly gives an image that sits on any page color. This tool reads the edge color, which for these images is white, and removes it.

The background isn't pure white. Can I still remove it?

Yes. Cream, ivory and light gray are within a few percent of white; a tolerance of 5 to 15 takes them in. Turn on Preview mask and raise the tolerance until the whole background is magenta and the subject is not.

How do I keep the white parts of a logo?

Keep Outer only on. It removes white only where it is connected to the border, so white lettering, highlights and the inside of a letter O stay. Only the background around the logo becomes transparent.

What is the best format for a transparent image?

PNG, for the web and for anything digital: it stores a real alpha channel and every tool reads it. This page always writes a PNG. For print, a TIFF with transparency is sometimes asked for; export that from your design tool.

What does the tolerance setting do?

Tolerance decides how close a pixel's color must be to the picked color to become transparent, as a percentage of the distance between black and white in RGB. At 0 only an exact match goes; at 10 to 20, nearby shades go too. Raise it when a background has gradients, shadows or JPG noise, and lower it when it starts eating into the subject.

Why is there a light fringe around the subject?

A fringe is left when the edge pixels are a blend of the background and the subject, which every anti-aliased or JPG-compressed edge has. Raise the tolerance a little so those blended pixels count, and keep Smooth edges on so they fade out instead of cutting hard. Preview mask shows whether the fringe is now covered.

How does edge smoothing work?

Smooth edges blends the boundary between the removed area and the subject: within the chosen radius, pixels are made partly transparent instead of fully, so the cut is anti-aliased rather than jagged. A radius of 1 or 2 pixels suits logos and screenshots; 4 or more softens photos. It only affects pixels that were already going to be removed.

What does Preview mask show?

Preview mask paints every pixel that will be removed in magenta over the original, so you can check the selection before downloading. Adjust the color and tolerance until only the background is covered, then turn the mask off: the download is always the real transparent PNG, never the magenta preview.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser decodes the file and does the pixel work with its Canvas API, and the page makes no request with it. You can load the page, go offline and keep working; the download is written from memory on your device.
