Chroma key is the film and video technique of shooting a subject against one strong color, usually green or blue, and then making that color transparent so another image can show behind it. This tool does the same for a still image: pick the key color, set the tolerance, and the color goes.

Can I remove a green screen?

Yes. Drop the image, open the picker and set the green of the screen, then raise the tolerance until the lit and shadowed parts of the screen are all covered in the preview mask. Smooth edges keeps hair and soft edges from cutting hard. The same works for a blue screen.

What if the image has several colors to remove?

One color at a time. Download the result, drop it back in and pick the next color; each pass keeps the transparency of the last. A tolerance above zero already catches the variations of one color, so most backgrounds need one pass.

Which image formats can I drop?

Anything your browser can decode: PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP, ICO and SVG. The output is always a PNG, because it is the common web format that stores an alpha channel; JPG has none. Start from the sharpest source you have, since compression artifacts around edges widen the tolerance you need.

What does the tolerance setting do?

Tolerance decides how close a pixel's color must be to the picked color to become transparent, as a percentage of the distance between black and white in RGB. At 0 only an exact match goes; at 10 to 20, nearby shades go too. Raise it when a background has gradients, shadows or JPG noise, and lower it when it starts eating into the subject.

What does Outer only do?

With Outer only on, the tool flood-fills from the four edges of the image and only pixels connected to the border become transparent. The same color inside the subject stays: white text on a logo survives the removal of its white background. Turn it off to remove the color everywhere, including enclosed areas.

How does edge smoothing work?

Smooth edges blends the boundary between the removed area and the subject: within the chosen radius, pixels are made partly transparent instead of fully, so the cut is anti-aliased rather than jagged. A radius of 1 or 2 pixels suits logos and screenshots; 4 or more softens photos. It only affects pixels that were already going to be removed.

What does Preview mask show?

Preview mask paints every pixel that will be removed in magenta over the original, so you can check the selection before downloading. Adjust the color and tolerance until only the background is covered, then turn the mask off: the download is always the real transparent PNG, never the magenta preview.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser decodes the file and does the pixel work with its Canvas API, and the page makes no request with it. You can load the page, go offline and keep working; the download is written from memory on your device.
