About

Use it to compare how two series move over the same months: where they cross, which one leads, whether they rise together. Lines can overlap without hiding each other, unlike stacked areas, so the gap between them reads directly. Past four lines the colors blur; the interactive version shows one at a time instead.

Two monotone curves share one set of months and one value scale, each in its own color, without dots until you hover: then both lines get a dot at that month. The tooltip shows the month and then one row per series, each with a dot in that series' color.

Usage

<script lang="ts">
import ChartLineMultiple from "@/components/charts/chart-line-multiple.svelte";
</script>
<ChartLineMultiple />

Customize

  • The rows hold both series, { month, desktop, mobile }. fold turns them into one row per month and series, and lineY draws a line per series with z: "series" and color: "series".
  • The curve is monotone, not natural, so a line never swings above or below a month's real value. A whenFocused(dot(…, { r: 4 }), { match: "x" }) last in marks draws the active dots, as Recharts' activeDot does.
  • color: chartColors(chartConfig) in the definition maps each series key to var(--color-<key>). The tooltip finds the label Mobile by the same key.
  • chartTooltip() focuses by month (group-x, its default), so one hover or key press shows both values. Its sort: "color-domain" lists them in config order.
  • The tooltip keeps its label and the default dot indicator, so ChartContainer needs no tooltip options here.

FAQ

How do I add a third line?

Add the field to every row (tablet: 120), "tablet" to the fields that fold reads, and a tablet entry in chartConfig with var(--chart-3). The new line takes var(--color-tablet), and the tooltip gives it a row named from the config.

Why are the curves monotone here?

A monotone curve never bends past a point, so neither line suggests a peak or a dip that isn't in the data. With two lines close together, a natural curve's overshoot can make them seem to cross when they don't. Change the curve option if you prefer a natural or straight shape.

How do I show which line is which?

Put ChartLegend inside ChartContainer: it draws a swatch and a label for every series in chartConfig, under the plot, or above it with verticalAlign="top". The tooltip names both lines on hover too.

What if the two series use different units?

Give one line a scale of its own: draw it as a second lineY on the unfolded rows, add a named scale with channel: "y" and side: "right" under scales, and bind that mark to it with yScale. Label both axes, since two axes make it easy to compare things that aren't comparable. Two small charts are often clearer.

How do I make one line stand out?

Both lines come from one lineY, so its stroke can be a function of the row that returns a lighter color for the other series. Or draw that series as a second lineY with strokeOpacity: 0.4 or strokeDasharray: "4 4".

How does keyboard focus work with two lines?

By month. chartTooltip() groups focus on the x value, so the arrow keys step through the months and every stop lists both series under the month, desktop first, in the order of the chart's colors.

API Reference

ChartContainer

<div> data-slot="chart"

The chart's accessible name: the card's title.

ariaDescription?string

The chart's accessible description.

class?string

The container's size: aspect-auto h-[250px] w-full, mx-auto aspect-square max-h-[250px]. It's aspect-video by default.

children?Snippet

What sits under the chart inside the container: a ChartLegend.

tooltip?(ChartTooltipContentOptions & { class?: string }) | false

ChartTooltipContent's options (indicator, hideLabel, labelFormatter…) for the default body, or false for TanStack's own tooltip body.

Type
(ChartTooltipContentOptions & { class?: string }) | false
renderTooltip?Snippet<[ChartTooltipBodySnippetContext]>

A whole tooltip body of your own, in place of ChartTooltipContent: it gets the focused points (each with its datum, group and color). A snippet.

Type
Snippet<[ChartTooltipBodySnippetContext]>
defaultIndex?number

The category whose tooltip shows before any pointer, as Recharts' defaultIndex.

height?number

A fixed height in pixels for the chart, in place of the container's.

aspectRatio?number

A width-to-height ratio for the chart, in place of the container's height.

initialWidth?number

The width the chart renders at before it's measured.

onFocusChange?(point: ChartPoint | null) => void

Called as the focused point changes: a pointer, a key or a tap.

Type
(point: ChartPoint | null) => void
onFocusGroupChange?(points: readonly ChartPoint[]) => void

Called with every point at the focused category (a stacked or grouped chart's).

Type
(points: readonly ChartPoint[]) => void
onSelect?(point: ChartPoint | null) => void

Called when a point is clicked or picked with Enter.

Type
(point: ChartPoint | null) => void
CSS variableType
--color-<key>?color

Each config key's color (its theme color in light and dark), set on the container: the marks paint with var(--color-<key>).

ChartTooltipContent

<div>

PropType
pointsreadonly ChartPoint[]

The focused points, from the tooltip's context. ChartContainer passes them to its default body; a body of your own passes its context's.

indicator?"dot" | "line" | "dashed"

The indicator's shape beside each row.

Type
"dot" | "line" | "dashed"
Default
"dot"
hideLabel?boolean

Hides the label above the rows (the focused category).

Default
false
hideIndicator?boolean

Hides each row's color indicator.

Default
false
label?string

The label's text in place of the focused category, looked up in config.

labelKey?string

The datum field (or config key) the label is read from, looked up in config.

nameKey?string

The datum field (or config key) each row's series is read from: a pie's browser.

valueKey?string

The datum field each row's value is read from, for points that carry geometry rather than values (a pie's, from pie()).

color?string

One indicator color for every row, in place of each series' own.

labelFormatter?(label: string, points: readonly ChartPoint[]) => string

Formats the label (the config's label or the category), with the rows' points: a date written out, a unit.

Type
(label: string, points: readonly ChartPoint[]) => string
formatter?Snippet<[{ index, item, name, value }]>

A row's content in place of its indicator, name and value, as shadcn's formatter: a unit, a currency, a total row. A snippet.

Helpers

ExportType
chartTooltip?(settings?: ChartTooltipSettings) => ChartDefinitionOptions

defineChart's second argument for a chart with a tooltip: what a pointer or a key focuses (group-x, each category's series, by default), the focus ring, and the host ChartContainer draws its body in.

Type
(settings?: ChartTooltipSettings) => ChartDefinitionOptions
chartTheme?ChartTheme

defineChart's theme in the site's tokens: the text, the grid and the palette (--chart-1 to --chart-5).

chartColors?(config: ChartConfig, keys?: readonly string[]) => { domain: string[]; range: string[] }

defineChart's color: each series key (in config order, or keys') painted var(--color-<key>), for marks with a color channel.

Type
(config: ChartConfig, keys?: readonly string[]) => { domain: string[]; range: string[] }
chartLinearScale?() => LinearScale

A value axis drawn as Recharts draws its default one: zero in the domain, five nice ticks. Pass it as a factory: y: { scale: chartLinearScale }.
