Intercom Setup Integration Block for React
An integration setup flow for a conversation-routing tool connecting to Intercom: pick the region, approve four permissions, test a sample message against the rules, then finish.
Installation
Overview
An integration setup section for React with Base UI, written for Inboxlane, a fictional tool that tags and routes conversations, connecting to Intercom in three steps. It runs in rail-to-rail bands under a start-aligned header with the mark pair at its end. Step 1 picks the region the workspace is hosted in (US, EU or Australia) and shows the API host for it. Step 2 ticks the four Intercom permissions Inboxlane asks for: three are required, and unticking one says what stops working, while Write conversations is optional, and without it Inboxlane tags but can't assign a team or leave a note. Step 3 is a test in a frame: type a sample message and see the inbox row it would produce, with the tag and team the first matching rule gives, or "No rule matched". Back and Continue move between steps; Finish setup is unavailable until the sample message has text, with the reason beside it, and ends on "Connected in this demo" with a ghost Disconnect. Every result comes from typed rules, in the browser: nothing is sent to Intercom, which a polite status line says from the start. Each step's heading takes focus when you move, and the steps share the tallest one's height so the block never jumps. Intercom is named in text only: no logo, colour or wordmark ships. The product and the rules are example data.
FAQ
Why ask for a region?
Intercom hosts a workspace's data in one region, and each region has its own API host: api.intercom.io for the US, api.eu.intercom.io for Europe and api.au.intercom.io for Australia. The block shows the host for the region you pick, so your integration calls the right one. The region is the one the workspace was created in; it isn't a choice made at install time.
Are those the real permission names?
They are the names Intercom's Developer Hub shows when an admin approves an app: Read conversations, Read and list users and companies, Write tags and Write conversations. Which of them your app needs depends on what it does; list your own in SCOPES, and mark the ones you can work without as optional. Unticking a required one blocks Continue and says why.
Does the test read real Intercom data?
No. The sample message is a plain text box, and outcomeOf applies four typed rules (billing, access, bug and churn-risk words) to what you type in the browser. If Write conversations is off, the team line says it isn't assigned. Nothing is sent anywhere; replace matchOf with a call to your own routing service to use real rules.
What does Finish setup do?
It changes local state only and a status line says "Connected in this demo. Nothing was sent to Intercom." Disconnect returns to the first step. Wire finish to your own OAuth start, where the admin approves the permissions in Intercom.
How does it work from the keyboard and with a screen reader?
Steps are a list of buttons; later steps are unavailable until you reach them. Moving focuses the new step's heading, and a polite line says "Step 2 of 3: Permissions". The test result is spoken once typing has paused. The permission rows are real checkboxes, named by their Intercom permission name.
How does it fit a phone, right-to-left layouts and reduced motion?
On a phone the step titles hide (the numbers stay), the two test panes stack and Back and Continue become full-width buttons. In a right-to-left layout the bands flip while hosts and tags keep their left-to-right order. The header fades up once on load, and not at all with reduced motion.
