What is the Popover?

shadcn.io's Popover is a panel that opens from a trigger and stays next to it, until someone presses Escape, clicks outside or picks something that closes it. It comes with PopoverTrigger, PopoverContent, PopoverHeader, PopoverTitle and PopoverDescription parts, positions itself so it stays on screen, and moves focus into the panel. Each example in this gallery is one small file built from those parts.

Yes. Every example is free to use in personal and commercial projects, with no attribution required. Seeing the code and installing an example takes a free shadcn.io account.

A Popover for any content that opens on click and stays beside its trigger, like a small form or a filter. A Dropdown Menu for a list of actions. A Hover Card for a preview on hover. A Tooltip for a few words on hover or focus. A Dialog when the task needs the whole screen's attention.

When should I use a popover instead of an inline form?

When the edit is small and occasional: one setting, a few filters, a quick comment. Keep the form inline when it's the main job of the page, and move it to a Dialog when it grows past a few fields.

How do I align the popover with its trigger?

Accepted Answer

Each library sets the side and the alignment its own way (positioning on the Popover on Ark UI, side and align on the content on Base UI and Radix UI, placement on React Aria), and every example's code uses the right props for the page you're on. The panel flips to stay on screen when there's no room.

How do I put a form inside a popover?

Accepted Answer

Put the fields and a submit button in the panel, as the feedback and settings examples do, and close the panel when the form is sent. Keep it to one or two fields; a longer form belongs in a Dialog.

How do I close the popover from a button inside it?

Wrap the button in PopoverClose where your library has one, or control the open state and set it to false in the button's handler. The actions, footer, form and filter examples close the panel this way.

How do I install a popover example?

Sign in with a free account, open the example and run the install command under Installation. The CLI adds the example's file to your project along with the Popover component, and Button, Input, Checkbox or Separator when the example uses them.

How do I open or close the popover from code?

Accepted Answer

Control it: pass the open state and its change handler to the popover, and set the state yourself. Uncontrolled is fine for everything else.

How do I make the panel wider or narrower?

Accepted Answer

Give the panel a width class, like w-80 or w-auto. The panel never grows wider than the screen, so it stays readable on a phone.

Yes. The trigger reports whether the panel is open, focus moves into the panel when it opens, Escape closes it and returns focus to the trigger, and every panel has a title, visible or for screen readers only. Icon-only triggers have an aria-label.

Yes. The trigger renders on the server, and the panel opens in the browser.
